In the former, they would pay the corporate tax on profits taken in, as well as taxed individually on any income drawn from those profits. They interact with each other in a way that's fundamentally different than Rimworld's systems, and give emergent problems that feel different each playthrough. If you're managing 200 dwarfs, it can be easy to just ignore the minute details, but they have massive effects. I think a lot of this just isn't noticed by players. Have you tried that "lock them in total isolation for multiple decades" strategy? It's way harder than just playing the game normally in my experience. Even locking them in, it negatively affects their psyche long-term, leading to slow mental deterioration unless you make significant efforts to keep them stimulated. Strange plots by strange beasts are constantly brewing in the tavern. I've had vampires fall into wells after being cut, infecting the entire fortress. I've had forgotten beasts made of gems, requiring smithing special weapons to smash through their skin. I've had new foul weather blow in, starting a pandemic as dwarfs contaminated each other with noxious slime. I've lost my seed stores to booze explosions after magma crabs crawled out of volcanoes. In Dwarf Fortress, if you aren't just locking yourself away from the profits and fun of actually experiencing the game, threats are highly unique. In RimWorld, beating the threats always goes the same way no playthrough ever involves unique threats. Once you know what you're doing in each game, you can lock yourself away behind a wall of cheese and become undefeatable. Don't dig under mountains for no bugs, make the exact same killbox with the optimal-dps weapon for any threat walking in, or make an even cheesier burn box for these threats, easily and massively overproduce to beat any food threats. I can lock myself off from pretty much every risk in RimWorld this exact same way. In Rimworld there will always be a risk even just looking at food, outdoor plants can die to toxic smog, and hydroponics will die in a flare. ![]() In dwarf fortress you can lock yourself into a cave with a dirt floor with a few seeds and last forever. There are: fewer workshops, less furniture, fewer traps/defenses, no embrasures, no levers, no mechanical stuff at all besides maybe the factory stuff, and nothing like minecarts. ![]() I don't think that's true of vanilla RimWorld. Dwarf Fortress has exactly that, plus complicated emotions that cause memories further affecting mood according to personality, which further changes personality over time, allowing to you effect intentional mental change in a dwarf over time. It's a list of plus and minus modifiers on a mood bar, with absolutely zero character development. Dwarf Fortress uses all these same things, plus: material layers, several material properties, weapon mass, contact area, a litany of skills, literal layers of health values, and weird random properties of stuff you're fighting. RimWorld combat boils down to: chance to hit at range, a single combat attribute, I think two health stats, a fixed damage value, percent-based armor reduction, and health bars. It only seems that way if you haven't delved into the obscure Dwarf Fort combat mechanics. They can also transform in your base, be a secret vampire within your base, sneak in to scout an invasion force, sneak in to plan a heist, or just sneak in an entire invasion force.
